How We Evaluate Financial Need
The single most important criterion for receiving financial assistance from The Scholarship Foundation is financial need. First we look at the total cost of education, including tuition, fees, room and board, and miscellaneous personal expenses such as transportation and clothing. Next we subtract any grant or scholarship dollars the student is receiving. Lastly, we subtract the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This figure is calculated by a formula established by Congress using income and asset information you entered on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The EFC is reported on the Student Aid Report (SAR).
Special circumstances may exist, but the majority of individuals who qualify for funding from The Scholarship Foundation have an EFC of less than $4,000. Occasionally a candidate with an EFC of as much as $12,000 has qualified for an interest-free loan. If you have questions about the process of determining financial need or to discuss a special circumstance that might affect eligibility, please call us at 314-725-7990.
Emergency Loan Program The Foundation provides emergency loans to students experiencing unforeseen and unplanned circumstances such as a family crisis, illness, death of a parent, or major change in sources of support during a current academic term.
Deedee Becker Loan Fund Established by the Becker family as a memorial to Deedee Becker, who died suddenly in 1982, this fund has provided interest-free loans to students of nursing with significant financial need. The sustained support of this program by the Becker family offers assistance year-round to students pursuing a degree or certificate in nursing at the undergraduate level.
Grants
By submitting the interest-free loan application, students are automatically considered for all funding programs available through The Scholarship Foundation. Approximately 40 students are awarded grants from The Scholarship Foundation totaling about $300,000 each year. More than 600 students will receive $2.76 million in interest-free student loans in 2008-09. All grants and loans are renewable.
