The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis has received a $3.8 million gift from the estate of Morton Deutch. The bequest is the largest gift from an individual in the Foundation’s nearly 100-year history. Mr. Deutch, who passed away in June of 2018, was a longtime supporter of the Foundation. His gift will help sustain the Foundation’s student programs for years to come.
“Mr. Deutch was a Scholarship Foundation contributor for about 20 years prior to his death. He told us of his family’s commitment to education and made several major gifts in honor of family members. He was especially interested in supporting engineering and related trade and technical fields,” stated executive director Faith Sandler. “Until his funeral, we were unaware of his heroic counterintelligence work in World War II and we were equally unaware that he had named The Scholarship Foundation a beneficiary of 40% of his estate. We are so honored to be trusted with his legacy of generosity and steadfast belief in the power of education. We take that responsibility seriously.”
Morton Deutch received his engineering degree from University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) and spent most of his career working for Boeing. After retirement, Mr. Deutch kept busy by volunteering at the Missouri History Museum and the St. Louis Art Museum as an antiquarian bookbinder.
